» The dreaded "blue screen of death" is the computer user's worst nightmare. You can't do anything else until you fix it, because when you try, this message appears: "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer". This is the kind of thing can ruin your week.

Here is quick way. Sometimes depending on how far it will boot and what version of windows it is. You can hit the F8 key as it is first starting up and get into safe mode. From there you can get into "My Computer" and right click on the "c" select the tools tab and do a defrag and schedule a disk check - check both boxes in disk check - one says "check for errors" the other one say "attempt to repair" This will fix it about 60% of the time!!!

However, if you have ruled out a hardware issue, then you will need to start up your PC in safe mode. The first thing you should try in safe mode is a virus(Exploit:Win32/Pdfjsc.AHF) check and spyware scan of your entire system. If anything was found, eliminated the problem then try to restart Windows XP again in normal mode.

For better, you can use DLL Suite to fix any blue screen of death caused by .sys error, or any missing dll files. It has a built-in feature of fixing BSOD, and contains a large update dll files library including .sys files and .exe files for you to free download.

Please run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) and then update to SP-1

  3. DANNY TRAN replied on March 16, 2013: » i have already installed SP1, does this affect your procedure?

I have downloaded the SURT and run it, I was asked to install a Hotfix for Windows (KB947821) is the fix needed for my problem.

  4. JOAQUIN VIGIL replied on March 16, 2013: » Your DMP file says SP-1 is not installed. SURT is asking for the hotfix because it is necessary and you should then install SP-1

  5. RICHARD KENDALL replied on March 18, 2013: » Check to see if the issue occurs in safe mode. To do so, follow these steps.

    a. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.

    b. Use the arrow keys to choose Safe mode in the Windows Advanced Boot Menu Options and then press Enter.

    c. Check if you can open the desktop icons, if not, then it could be some third party application that is causing the issue.
